Architect Albert Kahn’s legacy can be seen not only in the skyline of Detroit, but also in the stunning lakeside home of Edsel and Eleanor Ford. On this tour, you will learn how Kahn’s industrial vision and artistic achievements are reflected in the design of the Fords’ estate. The realization of Kahn’s vision for the Cotswold-style home, married with landscape architect Jens Jenson’s design for the grounds, helped earn Ford House a National Historic Landmark status. Your guide will take you inside and outside the home, as well as the attic and basement, to give you a close up look at Kahn’s masterpiece. Please dress for the weather and be prepared to navigate several sets of stairs. Cost is $18 for non-members, $15 for members.

Fridays, Friends and the Fords

Head to Ford House for a Friday night out on the estate! Take a guided tour of Eleanor Ford’s grand home, soaking in the beauty of the art, architecture and history. Then head outside to learn about the design of the lakeside landscape. Afterward, you may set out on your own to explore and soak in the twilight views of the lake, watch the boats go by, and or witness the sunset over the Meadow. Feel free to bring along a picnic basket and blanket and make an evening out of it! The Ford House grounds will be open for you to explore until dusk. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the estate in the evening with good friends or for a date night! Don’t forget to dress for the weather, as the Friday night tours will be rain or shine. Food and drink are not permitted inside the house, so please plan to leave your picnic supplies in your vehicle until after your tour. Please no alcoholic beverages. Tour time is at 6:30 p.m. You may arrive prior to your tour. The estate closes at dusk.

Art in the Meadow - Watercolors

Find your inspiration at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House! Enjoy the estate and a leisurely morning or afternoon creating art with watercolor paints outside on the grounds. This workshop is for artists at any experience level who are 16 years or older. Participants must bring their owns supplies (supply list will be available at fordhouse.org/events). The instructor is Beth Gauthier, from the Snow Studio at Rainy Day Art Supply in Grosse Pointe Woods.This program can be enjoyed by visitors at any level of art experience.

Garden Workshop: Looking for a care-free house plant? Succulents are the way to go! Let our horticulturist walk you through the planting, propagation and upkeep of these hardy plants. Not only interesting in appearance but easy to maintain, too! During this hands-on class we’ll teach you how to arrange, plant and care for a container of your very own. Please bring gardening gloves & hand trowel and your own container. Participants will receive a variety of small succulents as part of the class fee.

Discover what’s the buzz at Pollinator Palooza! Bring the family to Ford House for a day of fun hands-on activities and demonstrations to explore the world of bees, bugs, birds and butterflies. At Pollinator Palooza, you can: • Take a stroll through our butterfly house; • Peek into a living bee hive with Bees in the D; • Get all the secrets to attracting hummingbirds to your yard from Wild Birds Unlimited of Grosse Pointe Woods; • Learn all about benefical bugs with a live insect presentation from the Leslie Science & Nature Center. Plus, kids will have fun tasting honey, building a bee hotel, making seed bombs, get their face painted, much more! Everyone will have the opportunity to “adopt a pollinator” to take home. And learn how to become a citizen scientist by planting your very own Monarch Waystation. Bring your wings and join the pollinator party! Kids are welcome to come dressed as their favorite pollinators.
